The European Union (EU) was founded as a result of the Maastricht Treaty on Nov. 1, 1993. It is a political and economic union between European countries that sets policies concerning the members’ economies, societies, laws, and, to some extent, security.

November 1, 1993: Maastricht Treaty comes into effect. January 1, 1995: Austria, Finland, and Sweden join. 1995: Decision taken to introduce the single currency, the Euro.
